Dear Syria,
written by Nada Abdi
Dear Syria,
My blood covered homeland,
The mother whose children have left her
I am now in alienation
With this letter, I want to apologize for leaving you
It was without my will
I miss your soil, your air, your streets
I miss the walls of my home, even when they are in ruins
I miss all my friends and relatives, whom I was separated from
We all have new lives now without one another
I miss my school,
I wish I could have finished my studies
Dear Syria,
leaving you was more than just difficult
We fled to Turkey, and from Turkey to Greece
We traveled the sea that was filled with fear
But thank god we are now in a safe country in Europe
My lovely Syria,
I know you are missing your children
but I hope that one day we will live a normal life
under a roof of a country with no war
I promise you to complete my studies in Europe
I promise you to become a useful person and proud of your name
Yes, I am Syrian
